Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
can you only get pregnant before ovulation?
I am confused can you get Pregnant if you have sex on the first day of ovulation. The ovulation calculator said i would be ovulating from 01/21-01-26. I had sex on the 21st, and thought i could become pregnant, and then i read you can only become pregnant before ovulation. I am really confused, which one is it? Also is your fertile time during the time ovulation or before ?

    • ANSWER:
First of all, no online “calculator” can tell you when you ovulate. Some women have 28 day cycles every single month like clockwork, but some of them ovulate on day 8 and some of them ovulate on day 16. Both are normal, but the reality is, every women is different. These calculators are simply a myth.

And many many women ovulate on a different day each cycle, so there is tremendous variation. To learn when YOU ovulate you must chart your fertility signs by taking your basal body temperatue each morning or by using OPK strips or by using the clearblueeasy fertility monitor.

Up to 94 percent of pregnancies occur as the result of intercourse ON THE DAY you ovulate (the day your egg is released) or up to 2 days prior.

To get pregnant, your body must release an egg, which is called ovulation. Sperm must reach this egg while it is still viable, (meaning it can still be fertilized by sperm). From the moment the egg is released, your egg is viable for anywhere from 6 hours to 24 hours at the very very most.

Sperm can live inside your fallopian tubes and reproductive tract in fertile-quality cervical fluid for up to 72 hours, which is why having sex up to 2 days before you ovulate is very effective.

So in other words, just remember that you can’t tell by counting the days of your cycle when you ovulate. And remember that you are fertile for abourt 3 days of every cycle, the day of ovulation and the two days before.

  2. QUESTION:
hi wondering can you get pregnant before ovulation but after period?

Babyj – We are trying for our second child we have a 13 month old girl, fell pregnant instantly and thought i would find out a bit more about it this time.

    • ANSWER:
If you have unprotected sex up to five days before ovulation then the spem could still be in you to met the egg at ovulation. But that is in ideal conditions. Best time is day of ovualtion and up to two days before Ovulation. You could try using Ovulation predictor kits, that way you get 12-24hrs warning of impending Ovulation. You can get the kits at the chemist or online. I use baby4you.co.nz.
  3. QUESTION:
Can you get pregnant if you have sex 2 days before ovulation?
Since it hard for me to have sex on my ovulation date due to my partner working out of town and we just see each other on the weekends i just wanted to know what my chances are in getting pregnant before my ovulationd date. Which occording to opk it was 2 days after me and my partener had sex. Please let me know what yall think weve been trying to get pregnant for 2 yrs.

    • ANSWER:
      Sperm Living in Your Body
The maximum is usually five days, and only if you have optimal cervical mucus, which is eggwhite or watery. Sperm last longer in that fluid, which peaks shortly before ovulation. If you have recently menstruated, or are due to again soon, sperm probably won’t last more than a day or two, if they make it past the hostile cervial fluid you have the rest of the month.

Here is more input and advice:

It is a fact that sperm can live up to 4-5 days in your body, contrary to anything else you may have heard or read. In addition to this fact, the egg released can live between 24-48 hours. Therefore, your fertile period starts approximately 4-5 days PRIOR to ovulation and ends 24-48 hours after ovulation. If you do the math, it is possible for some woman to be fertile for as many as 7 days. You may have heard you can only get pregnant one or two days a month…SO NOT TRUE!!! You may only ovulate that long, but with the life of sperm and the life of the egg, your fertile time can be much longer. Another bit of info that many woman don’t know is that female sperm are slower but stronger and therefore live longer than male sperm which are faster, but weaker. In other words, male sperm will usually beat out female sperm in the race for the egg, yet female sperm will usually out live male sperm. So, if you are trying for a girl, have sex the 5th, 4th, and 3rd day before ovulation and then abstain.

  4. QUESTION:
Can you get pregnant before ovulation?
I had unprotected sex 10 days or so after the last day of my period. Could i get pregnant before ovulation? Everything I read is so confusing :(

    • ANSWER:
If you have a 28 day cycle you start ovulating on day 14, after your period, the sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days if the conditions are right.
  5. QUESTION:
can you get pregnant before ovulation?
I’m on day 12 of my ovulation cycle and had sex today, but he pulled out before he went and I didn’t orgasm. Can I still get pregnant?

    • ANSWER:
You didn’t say how long your cycle is, so it’s not possible to give you an answer. You can use an online ovulation calculator such as http://www.ovulation-calculator.org/ to find your fertile periods based on your period history.

a good site for ovulation/fertility calendar?
TTC my second baby boy. the first time i used an online ovulation / fertility calendar, but i cannot remember the site! any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
      www.fertilityfriend.com

  2. QUESTION:
is this correct for an ovulation calendar?
if i start my period on the 5th,
    it says:

Monday 5th April 2010 – First day of your cycle
Friday 16th April 2010 – Best chance of conceiving a girl
Saturday 17th April 2010 – A little bit fertile, best chance of conceiving a girl
Sunday 18th April 2010 – Fertile, best chance of conceiving a boy
Monday 19th April 2010 – VERY fertile, best chance of conceiving a boy
Tuesday 20th April 2010 – Time to ovulate
Friday 30th April 2010 – A home pregnancy test may work now.

i had sex on the 17th of april on saturday, which happens to fall in there? ^
so does this sound about accurate? & if so, on a scale of 1-10 how high are my chances of being pregnant? 10 being the highest?

anyone base there timing off of an ovulation calendar & it work just like that?

    • ANSWER:
every woman is different and the ovulation calendars can be extremely inaccurate for some but may work for others. usually itis pretty accurate if you have a regular 28 day cycle but a lot of women do not. I know that some science suggest that there are different characteristics between male and female sperm and as a result the timing of intercourse may influence gender. the male sperm are faster so if given the proper environment should be able to reach the egg faster if intercourse is timed while ovulating or very close to ovulation while female sperm may be slower they tend to live longer so if intercourse is timed a few days before ovulation they may out live the male sperm. . . that said this is not a sure thing whatsoever. In my own experience i know when i conceived my daughter and it was on the day of ovulation so given this frame of thought i should have had a boy but now i have a happy healthy 9 month old baby girl. so this did not work for me :) the best time to conceive is about 3 days before and the day of ovulation but with that you need to know exactly when you ovulate. You can do that by charting your BBT, using OPK’s, and checking cervical fluid which will turn very clear and stretchy like egg whites just before ovulation, and cervical position which will be low soft and open during ovulation. The cervical mucus is very important when ttc because it creates an environment that is very helpful for sperm swim up your reproductive tract and find your egg- the less CM you have the sooner the sperm live.

as for your chances of pregnancy sperm generally lives about 72 hours sometimes less sometimes more i have heard anywhere from 2 hours all the way up to 7 days and this all just depends on the quality of your cervical mucus. and in any given cycle you have a 25% chance of conceiving. i would give you a 3 out of 10 chance good luck and baby dust.

  3. QUESTION:
my ovulation calendar i have questions all answers would help?
ok so i have only tracked this month but the calender i used showed me for the next three months as well now it als gave me days ware i can conceive a girl better then days the i can get a boy should i go by that if i want a boy insted of a girl and today was the first day to try and have a bay but if it slims my chances then i dont know what i should try
keep in mind ladys i do not want to spend money on just tracking. you see all the wemon who have problems conciving and they spend thousands of $$$$$$ do find out i know the calender isnt 100% accuret but do i evan have a chance without the ovulation kit?

    • ANSWER:
i honestly wouldnt go by what the calender says. they go by averages and you may or may not ovulate on the days it says. as for getting a girl or boy there are a lot of theories to it but i havent found anything that has actually proved that you can determine the sex off of what days and positions. my advice would be to use an ovulation predictor kit. between tracking your bbt, cervical mucus and using ovulation kits that is going to be the best way of tracking your ovulation. i use a calender but only to roughly estimate when i will until i can get used to it. good luck!

  4. QUESTION:
I am wondering how accurate the ovulation calendar is when it says today is the day to try for a girl.?
I have been on a couple of sites and everyone is telling me that in order to have a girl i need to have sex with in the first three days of being fertile and not to have it the last couple of days…. Is this true, i am trying to break the family boy curse on my hubbys side, all of his family has boys no girls and i would really love a little girl we have a boy already and i want to up the chances of having a girl i just need to know if this is scientific or made up. Any imput would help.

  5. QUESTION:
How come I can’t get pregnant, 28 never concieved?
I’ve always had normal periods , but always have been severely painful since the very beginning. I’m 28 now and have never gotten pregnant. Me and my husband have been trying for a yr now and still nothing. I’ve tried monitoring with an ovulation calendar. He has boys from a prev relationship so I know its not him. I do have diabetes but it has been at good levels, and slight elevated bp at times. Other issues are a tilted cervix/uterus. A ultrasound last yr did show multiple cyst possible follicular. Is this why I have not gotten pregnant? Dr’s say I should be able to concieve but they have been wrong so far. Please help, this has been sad for the both of us

    • ANSWER:
I was having trouble conceiving and wasn’t ovulating. So, the dr. tested my thyroid levels. I had an underactive thyroid. After he put me on synthroid and leveled my thyroid out, I began to ovulate and conceived very quickly. Maybe it’s worth checking into. Good luck! I know how it feels when people tell you to quit stressing about it and that it will happen eventually. But, when you are trying and heartbroken all the time this advice is terrible. I went through a time when I was terrified that I couldn’t get pregnant. Sometimes people don’t understand all the fears that go through your mind. Keep checking in with your doctor and I wish you the best luck.

Use an Ovulation Calendar to Decipher Signs of Ovulation

Want to get pregnant but are not sure of your most fertile period? Well, you can use an ovulation calendar to keep track of the days when you are most likely to conceive. By doing so, you can actually plan your pregnancy instead of leaving everything to chance.

Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary, pushed down the fallopian tube, and is available to be fertilized. In lay terms, it is the time you are all set to conceive a baby. An ovulation calendar helps women in understanding the signs of ovulation and preparing ahead for their pregnancy. The following are some of the common signs of ovulation.

Day Count

A woman’s period usually starts 14 days after ovulation. For most women, the number of days between ovulation and the start of the next period is quite consistent. However, the number of days between the start of the period and the next ovulation changes between most of the women. In fact, this number can be different for every month.

Keeping a count of days is regarded as the easiest method of finding the right fertility time in your ovulation calendar. For women having a regular cycle, this method is quite effective for finding ovulation. If you have a perfect 30-day cycle, you will ovulate on Day 16, taking the first day of the next period as Day 1.

Basal Body Temperature
Due to hormonal changes, a woman’s body temperature increases directly after ovulation takes place. During the follicular phase, the hormone Estrogen assists in facilitating the production of an egg in the ovaries. However, after ovulation, a woman’s body witnesses a dramatic rise in progesterone, the reproductive hormone. This rise in progesterone levels leads to an increase in body temperature.

  1. QUESTION:
    Ovulation Calendar?
I’ve been on all the parenting websites, and done the ovulation calendar…and it said this week, I was wondering if it makes a difference that my period was irregular before the pill, then I got off the pill and my period was late by 1 week…does this make the ovulation calendar off? I was told to count from the 13-15 day since the first day of my period….does that sound right?

    • ANSWER:
It is always better to go by the BBT(Basal body temp), opk’s and the change in cervical mucus, than those calenders. They are just computerized standard programs, not personalized for you. You can use them as a guideline, but to narrow it down to an exact date take BBT, use opk and figure out your cervical discharge. All the best to you!

Girl Babies names dress – Pregnancy Babies

Are More Girls Than Boys Conceived Just Before Ovulation?

I often write articles meant to help couples who want to conceive a baby girl achieve this goal. Recently, someone emailed me with the question: “Are their more baby girl pregnancies that occur right before ovulation?” In other words, is the success rate for conceiving a daughter higher if you conceive during the few days before you ovulate? I wholeheartedly believe that the answer to this question is yes (but for more reasons than one.) I’ll explain everything that goes into being successful in getting a girl baby in the following article.

Why Conceiving Just Before Your Egg Is Ready (Three Days Prior To Ovulation Is Optimal) Favors Getting A Girl Baby: Before I get into the timing of conception, I want to explain why this timing is so important. The gender of your baby will depend on a few things. The mother-to-be’s egg will either be fertilized by either a Y sperm chromosome (which will get you a boy) or an X chromosome (which will result in a girl.) On the surface, this seems like 50 / 50 odds but there are many variables that can greatly stack the odds for the Y or the X to have an advantage.

Plus, these chromosomes have wildly different behaviors. The boy sperm are lightning fast, while the girl sperm are slow. But, the girl sperm are extremely virile and strong while the boy sperm are vulnerable and weak. The girl sperm can live for days, while the boy sperm die off quickly. (Luckily though, their quickness helps to counter this weakness.)

The reason that you want to conceive BEFORE you ovulate is because by doing so, you are giving the boy sperm a longer period of time to die off before they can make it to the egg. The optimal time frame is three days prior to ovulation. Any sooner than this and the girl sperm would start to deteriorate as well. Any later than this and the boy sperm could still be quite healthy and fast.

Obviously, for this to work well, you’ll need to know when you’re going to ovulate well before this actually happens. It’s said that conceiving a boy can be easier because you get to conceive after ovulation happens. So, you actually have more time once you’ve ovulated if you want a son. But, if you want a daughter, knowing that you’re already ovulated is much too late. You’re already missed the window. So, you need to be able to foresee when you will ovulate (in the future) and take action well before that.

Obviously then, you’ll need a very reliable method. I know that many still try to use the calendar or cervical mucus methods, but these are so outdated and leave so much room for error. Technology has given us better, more reliable ways. There are saliva and urine ovulation predictors that can show you small changes that tell you that ovulation is on the horizon. I prefer using saliva as these are reusable (and less expensive over time) and allow you the flexibility of not needing to use first morning urine. You can use them at any time of the day and you can really see the changes in your saliva taking place.

Two Other Things That Will Greatly Improve Your Chances Of Conceiving A Girl: Timing your ovulation is extremely important, but it is only one part of your plan. You’ll need to do everything that you can to ensure that the fast boy chromosomes don’t have a chance to race for the egg. One other way that you can do this is to use shallow penetration when you are trying to get pregnant. This will give the Y guys a long hard trip, stacking the odds that they won’t be able to make it.

Another thing that you’ll need to do is to create a highly acidic vaginal environment with a high PH reading. Why is this important? Because those fast little Y guys just can’t handle this hostile environment. So, as mean as it sounds, if you’re wanting a daughter, you’ll want to put getting a hostile vaginal environment high on your to-do list. How do you do this? In two ways. First, you can go on a high PH diet. You’ll consume foods that are acidic and avoid foods that are alkaline. You’re not limiting the amount that you eat in any way. You’re only limiting the types of foods that you eat. There are food list that can help with this.

The final way to get a high enough PH is by douching. I realize that I criticized old fashioned cervical mucus monitoring, but I’m now telling you to douche, which many consider to be old fashioned. However, the douching that I’m suggesting goes much farther than old fashioned vinegar and water. Most douche recipes today are based on what your PH already is. You can test this using saliva strips that test where you already fall. Then, you have concrete evidence of how far you will need to raise until you’re high enough to conceive a girl. Once you have this reading, you will go on the diet or use the applicable douches (depending on your reading.) Or, you can incorporate both methods. Doing this will often give you faster and more dramatic results. This is a personal choice though. Some people would rather go all in and speed this process along and some can only handle one at a time.

Finally, it’s very important that you address all of these things together. You’re short changing yourself if you use the correct intercourse position only to go in with an acidic environment or you make the mistake of conceiving too late. Using all of these variables together will greatly increase your odds (some estimate them as high as 90 plus percent) so it makes sense to make sure you cover all of your bases.

Conceive A Girl is a website I put together to offer step by step instructions, hints, tips, and resources for couples wishing to conceive a baby girl. You’ll find resources for douche recipes and food lists, as well as ovulation predictors and PH test strips. Take a look if you like at http://conceive-a-girl-baby.com/

    • ANSWER:
Having intercourse everyday is the only way to improve your chances for getting pregnant.. Also if ones has intercourse everyday it does affect the sperm count as it keeps reducing which increases the chances for baby girl.. If you would have noticed mostly male partners who work abroad, guys in army, or military who don’t ejaculate for a long time and have intercourse once they are back have chances for high percentage of boys as per study…

I think its again the fate of the baby whether it will become a boy or a girl and no one can decides or predict the perfect ovulation time. Also fyi. the egg decides which one of the healthy sperm it wants, because without the permission of the egg it cannot gain entry… Its only nature that decides…Hope it helps…

  4. QUESTION:
TTC, should i try to conceive 3-4 days before ovulation to have a baby girl?
Our family is hoping to have a baby girl in addition to our family. I have read all over google that girl sperm is slower, but stronger.. there for you should try and conceive 3-4 days before ovulation. Is that true? Can my chances still be 50/50 if i have sex one day before ovulation? what do think? any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it is true. It is not accepted 100% in the medical community, but many doctors do appear to believe in some validity to this theory. Another way to increase your chances of conceiving a girl is to NOT have an orgasm. The orgasm releases endorphins as well as gives male sperm a boost. Also, do NOT have sex on your exact ovulation date. Again, these are just theories that seem to have a little validity.

  5. QUESTION:
is it true to make sex 2,3 days before ovulation you can conceive a baby girl?

JXLab.com: JX Ovulation Calendar, Fertility Calculator - Selecting our ...

Ovulation calculator to conceive a boy-Can you really choose the gender of your baby?

An ovulation calculator to conceive a boy is a very useful tool especially when combine with other natural gender selection methods that will multiply your chances of choosing your babies gender.

Ok to get pregnant with a boy baby your bodies ph level should be alkaline which allows the fast male sperms to flourish as opposed to acid which destroys them. So you need to avoid foods like fish, red meat and corn because these are all acid based foods.

The next thing to use alongside your ovulation calculator to conceive a boy is the positions that you use when making love. For a boy you need very shallow positions which means that the much faster male sperms can get to the egg well before the female ones.

Now to the ovulation calculator itself, you need to use this to work out what day you are ovulating and then plan intercourse accordingly. So to conceive a boy you should be making love on the very day of the egg being released and with shallow entry. This gives the male sperms an outstanding chance of fertilizing the egg because they are so fast. On the other hand if a girl baby is what you want then intercourse two days before ovulation is recommended because the female sperm are much stronger and will easily survive for two or three days.

To answer the question of can you really choose the gender of your baby? The answer is a definate yes, with the help of an ovulation calculator combined with other natural gender selection methods you have a huge 90% chance of predicting the gender of your baby.

    • ANSWER:
Generally sperm that has a higher chance of becoming a girl swims slower, and lives longer. So the best time to try for a girl is about 2-4 days before ovulation.
Sperm that has a higher chance of becoming a boy swims fast, but doesnt live long, so the best time to try for a boy is the day before ovulation, and the day of ovulating.
So I’d say your chances for a boy are slightly higher.

  2. QUESTION:
confused with what i enter for dates into the ovulation calculator?
ive just found a site that says enter your cycle length and then says last day of your mentral period, but has a note -this is the first day you see red blood, spotting does not count-
ive always been told teh spotting does count as your first day, im really confused, what do i enter? have i got it wrong all this time? I’m trying to concieve a boy hence why it really matters when i get it wrong by a day or two. is it true, spotting isnt counted as the first day?
but its a fact that the sperm carrying the xy swims faster and die quicker, so it makes sense to have sex a day before ovulation for a boy.

    • ANSWER:
–When your period starts: It is the first day you have red bleeding OR the first day that you can fill up a pad or tampon. While it is normal to see some spotting before your period starts, spotting does NOT count as the beginning of your period. So, day 1 of your cycle is the first day of red or heavier bleeding, and the last day is the day before the next period starts. I’ve been charting cycles for about 3 years, so I know the rules on how cycles work pretty much backward and forward. Spotting does not count. In fact, if you had spotting that lasted for a week but was never really bleeding, then you didn’t have a period. Many women can continue to see some spotting during early pregnancy and they incorrectly label it a period when it’s really just spotting. If they knew that spotting and period do not mean the same thing, they would know to take a pregnancy test when they have a spotty “period” (that’s not actually a period). This is one reason why it’s important to clarify the difference between just spotting and an actual period.

–Ovulation calculators: Use it at your own risk. All they do is crunch numbers based on your past cycles. They cannot look into your body and see what’s REALLY happening, though. There is no biological law that says that your current and future cycles will be exactly like any past cycle. Plus, women have different length luteal phases (the extent of time between ovulation and your period). All those calculators do is subtract 14 days from the length of your cycle, because they generally assume that women have 14-day luteal phases. For example, with a 33-day cycle, it would tell me that I would ovulate on day 19. But it would be wrong, because I personally have a 13-day luteal phase, and I KNOW I ovulated on day 20 last cycle. Women can have a luteal phase anywhere between 12 and 16 days on average, and even slightly less or more. Furthermore, based on past cycles, I had been ovulating around day28 recently, but my last cycle and my current one, I ovulated on day 20. The past just can’t predict the future perfectly. If timing of intercourse matters so very much to you, I recommend you ditch those simple calculators because they’re really not that great and absolutely cannot pinpoint ovulation. Http://www.fertilityfriend.com is a free online resource that can help you figure out when you ovulate fairly accurately using daily scientific data collection. It has tutorials for how to get started.

–Gender selection: The timing-intercourse-for-gender stuff is called the Shettles method. And it’s just one guys theory. You’re willing to admit that the information you’ve been told about spotting/period may be incorrect… well, you need to be ready to admit that everything you read or are told needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Saying “it’s a fact” without being able to quote evidence does not actually make it a fact. Since you seem most interested in this, I’ll give you some links to research articles below. Here’s the short about it: It has been found that X and Y sperm swim differently in flowing fluids, but they swim exactly the same speed in stationary fluids. While the fluids in a woman’s reproductive tract are not completely stationary, they do not “flow” and in fact they move like molasses– quite slowly, easily taking many hours to move the few inches just from the cervix to the opening of the vagina. So the “fact” the sperm moved differently doesn’t matter much once they’re in the woman. Furthermore, several studies find that the timing of intercourse has NO correlation whatsoever to the gender of the baby, while Shettles himself never did actually put his theory to a solid peer-reviewable research study. The only two things that have been found to possibly have any influence whatsoever on a baby’s gender is the length of the follicular phase of the woman’s cycle (and you don’t have any control over that) and the quality of a woman’s normal diet (has a limited impact, but still an observable one). Just because sometimes women claim that they did this and it “worked”… it doesn’t mean it actually works. It just means that they only had 1 out of 2 odds anyway. When I water my garden in the morning and then it rains later that day, I don’t assume that my timing on plant-watering has ANY correlation to the storm coming. It’s not related at all. Same for timing of intercourse to gender of baby. People say it works based on no data whatsoever, while there’s actually lots of data about how it doesn’t work.

  3. QUESTION:
Confused? trying for a boy. When should I do it. Used the ovulation test for 2days now and positive. When do it?
Want a boy and dont want to do it early cuz might have a boy? what should mucus look like too be sure Im ovulation. Also Im based calculator, will ovulate on the day 14.Do it now or later. Im scared I mised it my o day or scared if I do it I’ll get a girl cuz too early.Confused? Help.
On my 10,11 and 12day got positive result, ovulation test. Based on calculator will ovulate on 18thday. Shld I do it now to get a good chance of boy or is it early. When do I really know its the peak of O?

    • ANSWER:
      Timing
For a boy: abstain or use condoms until four days before ovulation, then abstain totally until 12 hours prior to ovulation, then have sex, just once.

      Diet
For a boy, increase salty foods and red meat and cut down on dairy products. However, increasing salt and reducing calcium can lead to health problems during pregnancy, so consult your doctor before starting a pre-conception diet. Scientists have also found a correlation between a mother’s eating habits around the time of conception and the sex of her baby. A high-calorie diet – and in particular eating cereal for breakfast – at is believed to tip the probability towatrds having a boy.

      Positions
To conceive a boy, try rear entry with deep penetration.

      Orgasm
If you’re trying for a boy, try to orgasm before your partner. This increases the flow of alkaline secretions in the vagina, which is best for boy-producing sperm.

Timing Ovulation

Whether you are trying to conceive or you are interested in natural family planning, you may be interested in timing your ovulation. This can help you to time intercourse around the time that you ovulate, or avoid it to lower your chances of getting pregnant.

Your ovaries produce at least one egg every menstrual cycle. The follicles in the ovaries will mature and release an egg. This is referred to as ovulation. Follicles form on the outside of your ovaries. They are essentially like tiny holes that grow and fill with fluid as the cycle progresses. The egg is housed inside of the follicle and protected by the fluid.

Over time, as the follicle matures and increases in size, it will get ready to burst open. When the follicle bursts, it sends the egg surrounded by fluid into the fallopian tube. The fluid protects the egg on its journey and also helps it to travel down the tube. If the mature egg encounters sperm, then this is when fertilization will take place. If the egg is fertilized, then it should implant when it reaches the uterus and pregnancy occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What works for your to predict ovulation?
Do you use a calender? Body temperature? Or an ovulation kit? If you use and ovulation kit or have used one did it work? How do you use one?

    • ANSWER:
I usually go by my CM, but I have very regular cycles and so far I’ve ovulated on the same day every month. I can confirm that by charting my BBT, but to know when I’m actually ovulating I check my CM and cervix position. I really like charting my BBT because it has really helped me to know what is going on with my body.

  2. QUESTION:
How do you predict ovulation days?
How many weeks you have to wait to know if ovulation has occurred?

    • ANSWER:
There are ovulation tests you can buy at your local pharmacy. Other than that, I think you ovulate about 12 days after the first day of your period.

  3. QUESTION:
Fertility help! How can I best predict ovulation at 39 years of age?
Since the LH surge is not the best indicator of ovulation in women who are perimenopausal, what is? I have a doctor who is not really motivated about my getting pregnant. I need to be more informed about what I should be looking for and getting tested.

I was doing the “first response” home ovulation kit and I was showing high LH surges, which is supposed to mean that you are ovulating. But in women who are older and might be getting closer to menopause, their LH surges are frequent. So what is a better indication of ovulation?

  4. QUESTION:
How to predict ovulation with out a period?
I had a baby almost nine months ago and have been exclusively breast feeding which in turn has caused me to not have a period. My husband and I would like to conceive soon but I am not ready to stop breastfeeding my little one quite yet. How can I tell if I am ovulating?

    • ANSWER:
You could buy ovulation predictor tests, but generally speaking, if you didn’t get a period, you didn’t ovulate 2 weeks ago, so you’d likely be wasting money on the tests.

  5. QUESTION:
How reliable is BBT to predict ovulation, can it be wrong?
I came off the pill in January and I’m charting my first cycle. Fertility friend has just said I ovulated on CD25 which seems a bit late to me? I’m wondering how acurate charting can be and whether there are women who have conceived even though their BBT chart has been all over the place?

    • ANSWER:
after coming offf pill i charted BBT, it was more accurate, i would say. as it was my first month, i also used OPKs to cross check my ovulation date, i did on the day FF said i O’ed. so i would say FF calculates based on the details u give.if u have entered EWCM on a particular day and the temp goes down the same day, it woul pint out that day as the ay u ovualted..

Can my foreign husband/wife work in the U.S.? How do I get his/her work visa after getting married?

America is a dreamland of opportunities and there are many foreign nationals who have found a better living in the United States of America. Among these foreign nationals who had immigrated into the United States, many of them have been married to the U.S. citizens through email and Internet. The number of Americans marrying foreigners is increasing every year and has achieved a cancerous growth. Every year thousands of Americans find their prospective spouses in foreign land through foreign trips, email marriages or through mail order bride facility. The important reason why many Americans prefer foreign brides/grooms is that, they are unable to find the man/girl of their dreams through the conventional American dating system.

If you are one of those the U.S. citizens who have married a foreigner, you have to get your foreign spouse a U.S. marriage visa, so that he/she can stay in the United States legally. There are two types of U.S. marriage visas that you can get your spouse. They are

a Immigrant visa for a Spouse of a U.S. Citizen (IR1 or CR1 marriage visa)

a Nonimmigrant visa for spouse – K-3 marriage visa

With the help of these U.S. spouse visas, you can bring your foreign spouse into America legally and without any complications, provided all the U.S. marriage visa requirements are met.

If your spouse wants to work in the United States of America after your marriage, it is not necessary that he/she has to apply for a separate U.S.A work visa. It is mandatory for a normal foreigner to get a U.S.A work visa, in order to work in the U.S. But if the foreigner is married to an American citizen, in your case, he/she needn’t apply for a U.S.A work visa. The K-3 marriage visa is more than enough for your spouse to be employed legally in America. With this U.S. marriage visa, he/she has to file form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization document, which is a work permit. When he/she enters the U.S.A as an immigrant on a U.S. spouse visa, your spouse will receive a passport stamp, which authorizes him/her to be employed in the United States legally. As a result, this K-3 marriage visa is proof enough for to enjoy the benefits of a green card holder till she gets one.

Similarly in the case of a conditional U.S. spouse visa (IR1 or CR1), your spouse can apply for a work permit by filing Form I-765, and thus get the permission to work in the United States legally. Having said all that, getting a U.S. spouse visa is not a cakewalk and requires a lot of care and attention to detail. A small error in the application form will result in denial or rejection of your spouse’s petition. He/she might not be able to enter the United States legally, thus losing her chance to find a future with you in America. Extreme caution has to be exercised while filling up the form, and all the necessary documents should be attached without fail.

If you feel you might go wrong in filing the petition for a U.S. marriage visa, then you can make use of the e-books sold by USAMarriageVisas.com. These e-books from USAMarriageVisas.com provide information and suggestions on filling up your form without any mistakes and the documents you should carry. These e-books will take you through the entire procedure of the marriage visa with commendable ease.

  5. QUESTION:
can you become pregnant 2 days after ovulation and 1 day after u r fertile?
Me and my husband had sex 2 days after i ovulation and one day after i was fertile… what are my chances of been pregnant am 5 days till my period and i’ve been feeling sick and having cramps like am about to get my period can anyone HELP ME PLZ !!!! i already have 2 kids 7 and 3 years but this never happen to me wit them so i don’t know what to think…….

    • ANSWER:
When an egg is released during ovulation, it can survive from 12-24 hours. This is the time-frame after ovulation you have to babydance to catch that egg! Any time after this, the egg will already be fertilised or will not have been caught this month. Having sex 2 days before ovulation is much more likely to result in pregnancy although bear in mind that it is possible to ovulate a day or two out of sync from time to time. You would only really know your exact day for sure if you are using a method such as ferning, charting temps, using OPKs etc.

Cramping before your period is illusive. It can be indicative of early pregnancy but also can be put down to PMS. The fact that you don’t usually have this is a promising sign. You should know for sure in 5 days time!!

... Woman Calendar is a new, easy-to-use, user-friendly personal ovulation

Using Ovulation Calendars to Get Pregnant Fast

There’s no secret to the basic science being getting pregnant. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple for every couple; some couples find themselves plagued with infertility issues, whether they be minor setbacks in their quest to conceive, or more problematic issues that require medical intervention.

Many infertility problems are actually lack of planning on the couples’ part. Using simple methods of tracking the woman’s cycle, couples may find it a lot easier to conceive. The use of ovulation calendars to get pregnant has become increasingly popular as information about ovulation and conception has spread with the use of the internet.

Using ovulation calendars to get pregnant is incredibly easy, and can diminish or eliminate the fertility problems that many couples have been suffering with. Using an ovulation calendar, often called the rhythm method, is the original form of contraception. Only in the last few decades have women realized this same method can help track and estimate ovulation, making it much easier to conceive.

Using ovulation calendars to get pregnant involves charting the days of a woman’s cycle on a calendar, and then calculating the length of the longest and shortest cycles to determine the most fertile days. These days are when conception are most likely to occur. To get started with ovulation calendars to get pregnant, you will need to find a calendar to use for tracking.

While some women choose a traditional paper calendar or date planner, many women are turning to the internet for online ovulation calendars. You can find an online calendar for free from many different websites, and they usually allow you to add additional information about your cycle as well. Including your daily base temperature, symptoms and moods, and other information about your cycle on your ovulation calendar can help you better track your cycle and predict future ovulation dates, and it can also teach you to become more in tune with your body. It is imperative to be consistent when using ovulation calendars to get pregnant.

The accuracy of tracking depends on your daily commitment to keeping it updated. Missing a few days can throw your overall results off, and make your estimation for ovulation entirely inaccurate. While using ovulation calendars to get pregnant is extremely easy, it can also be very time consuming and even a bit demanding at times. Stick to it, and remember the goal of cycle tracking is conception – which means with perseverance, the end result will be the baby you and your partner have been trying so hard to conceive!

  4. QUESTION:
if I missed my ovulation time can I still get pregnant?
it stated on my ovulation calendar

Thursday 16th December 2010 – First day of your cycle

Saturday 25th December 2010 – Best chance of conceiving a girl

Sunday 26th December 2010 – A little bit fertile, best chance of conceiving a girl

Monday 27th December 2010 – Fertile, best chance of conceiving a boy

Tuesday 28th December 2010 – VERY fertile, best chance of conceiving a boy

Wednesday 29th December 2010 – Time to ovulate

but I didn’t start to try for a baby until the first of january until now can I still get pregnant?

    • ANSWER:
If you really missed your ovulation time, no.

However, ovulation calenders are based on assumptions that may or may not be right. If your calender is off, you may have ovulated later than expected.

And by the way, the boy/girl thing is nonsense. At most you can tweak the odds a fraction, but they stay within the 50-50 area.

  5. QUESTION:
Did I concieve on day of ovulation?
My husband and I have 3 wonderful girls and thought we would give the Settles method a go mainly for fun to try to conceive a boy. Either way we really aren’t too fussed if we have a boy or girl we will be over the moon be it boy or girl…..

My question is this…….I have been tracking my temp and CM as well as using OK. Over the past 3 months i believe I have gotten in touch with my cycle.

Before our attempt the following was done by both my husband and I.

    1. No sex for 5 days leading up to our attempt
    2. Hubby drank coke 30 mins before attempt
    3. Deep penitration (sorry TMI)
    4. Waited for my CM shift from creamy to egg-white
    5. Attempted 12 hours after first positive OPK
    6. Attempt was 3 days after temp rise (i waited for OPK and CM to be favourable)
    7. Also went by Chinese gender calendar for a laugh!

We are over joyed as we got a + pregnancy test first go! What I would like to know is if going by your experience and knowledge do you think we did everything correctly to concieve a baby boy?

temperature as ovulation prediction | Simmering Hope

3 Ways To Predict Ovulation

Any women in her fertile years should have knowledge about when she is ovulating. This will help her reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy as well as getting pregnant when she wants to have a baby.

Let’s review three techniques for determining when ovulation occurs:

1) Calendar method:

This method uses the starting date of the woman’s period and the cycle length.Assuming a regular cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days before the next period date. It’s the simplest of methods that works reasonably well for a majority of women. It does not work too well for women with irregular cycles.

2) Basal temperature:

During the days prior to ovulation, a rise in the level of luteinizing hormone LH causes a slight drop in body temperature. When ovulation occurs, the body temperature goes up. A basal thermometer is accurate enough to detect the changes in body temperature and can be used to determine when ovulation occurs. It’s more accurate than the calendar method but of course it comes with the price of having to remember to measure the temperature every morning. The biggest change in temperature is noticeable when ovulation has occurred, meaning a woman may not know about her most fertile days until after the fact.

3) Cervical Mucus (CM)

During the days prior to ovulation, the cervical mucus thins as its pH level rises. The thinner mucus allows the sperms to pass through the cervix and reach the fallopian tubes, where they wait for an ovum to be released. Shortly after ovulation the mucus reverts to being thicker again. So by performing daily checks of the cervical mucus, a woman can detect how fertile she is.

There are many products available to predict ovulation, just google for ovulation calendar or ovulation predictor.

Most of the calendar method offerings on the internet are usually free. Some require downloading their software but many are web-based.

There is even a wireless service that sends ovulation and period messages to the women’s cell phone, making it truly impossible to forget when you can expect to ovulate or start your period.

I have been trying to keep track of when I ovulate based upon cervical mucus..I start having cervical mucus usually 3- 4 days after my period and it last about 4 days..is that a sign of ovulation or that ovulation is beginning and your actual ovulation time is after all that when you have no mucus??
how do you find that proper or improper..I thought this is where you can openly ask womens questions ??

Usually you have an increase in clear discharge around the days of ovulation. It lasts about 3-4 days. Your days and timing seem to be on tract.

    • ANSWER:
The temp method you are talking about is basal body temp charting. This method can take a few months when you start because it doesnt really predict ovualtion but it charst you ovualtion patterns. After a few months you can see the patterns in the dips and rises of temps. You can type “charting basal body temp” into your yahoo search and there are tons of websites that can explain it all and even offer free charts to help you. Good luck!

  3. QUESTION:
    OVulation????
Ok I have a silly question here but I was looking on the ovulation sites and they say thats its usually 12-14 days after your period. Well my periods are really regular. But according to that I should have ovulated between the 31-2 of this month. But i am pretty good on knowing when I am more muscousy and that was on the 4th as well as my sex drive was right up. If you know ur body I would rely on that not a website. Everybody is different, so if that is what ur body does follow ur own ‘calender’. And good luck! or Congratulations! haha

  4. QUESTION:
    oVULATION?
I’m new here and trying to get some help/opinions.
I’m a 26 year old female, not on birth control. I am married so sexually active. I have a typical 30 day cycle. But 10 days after my last period ended, I started having brown/pink discharge. This has been going on for 5 days now but turned straight brown by day 2. I keep reading it could be a number of things, including ovulation, but I really don’t think it is…it’s a completely different texture…just slimy! Anyway it started around the time I THINK I should’ve started ovulating but hasn’t stopped…5 days later. Could this possibly be implantation bleeding or something else? I hope I’ve provided all the info needed for the best judgement. thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
You may be pregnant. : ) I am not a gyno, but based on your description, I would say implantation bleeding, yes. Go take a home pregnancy test and/or make an appointment with your gyno. (Congrats if you are!)

  5. QUESTION:
How many days after ovulation does one start their period?
Last month I used the ovulation kit to see my ovulation date. I started my period 14 days after ovulation. This month again i used the ovulation kit. I ovulated exactly 20-21 days after the start of my period (which was same as last month). Now it is however 18 days after my ovulation date and I have not started my period. I get abdominal pain and i feel like I will start my period any moment. I do not want to get too hopeful about being pegnant. But can anyone tell me what would be the duration after ovulation to start my period. Does it remain constant month to month? Other symptoms I have are only tenderness in my breats and i feel a bit bloated.

    • ANSWER:
Normally, the hormones that cause you to ovulate also cause you to start bleeding 14 days after ovulation. take a pregnancy test. You can test as early as 14 days after ovulation. sounds like you may have gotten lucky!

Baby Gender Predictor : How To Plan For A Girl Or Boy

How Can I Time My Ovulation To Conceive A Boy? Here's How

If you want to have a baby boy, there are a few natural ways that you can manipulate the timing and position of intercourse and vaginal PH during conception that can greatly increase your chances of having a son.

Of these variables, timing conception to correspond with the woman’s ovulation can be one of the most important pieces of this puzzle. Here’s why:

Y (Boy) Sperm Are Faster, But Weaker Than X (Girl): During conception, a man’s sperm contains an equal amount of chromosomes that after conception can produce either a male and female baby. If a Y chromosome sperm fertilizes the egg first, the conception will result in a baby boy. If it’s instead an X, the result will be a baby girl.

Since the sperm contain both X and Y chromosomes, couples have a random chance of conceiving either sex going in. However, you can manipulate different variables, based on what we know about the different characteristics of each.

For example, the Y (boy sperm) are very fast swimmers and will generally make it to the egg first. The catch though is that they are much more fragile and die off faster. The X (girl) are extremely hard and can survive for a longer period of time in a harsher environment.

Timing Of Ovulation For A Boy: That’s why in order to have a son, you should conceive as close to possible on the day of ovulation. The most optimal time is on the day of. If you conceive well before ovulation, you would increase your chances of having a girl because this would give the hardier X sperm the advantage since they can survive long enough to wait for the egg while the Y can not.

  1. QUESTION:
Im feeling ovulation cramps right now, when should I have intercourse to conceive a boy?
I should be the most fertile on the tenth and eleventh, but I feel cramps right now on the eighth. We want to conceive our third child and wish for it to be a boy. We are using the ovulation timing method.Any idea of what to do? Im confused from all the information out there.
we already have 2 girls and would be happy with either another girl or a boy, but we want to try our best at having a boy.

    • ANSWER:
You cannot do anything to determine the sex of your child. There are many old wives tales out there but they are not scientifically accurate. An egg carries the XX chromosome while the sperm cell carries XY thereby determining the gender of the baby. Many sperm cells enter your body and they each have a set gender and it’s really pure luck which sperm reaches the egg.

    • ANSWER:
At this one web site I was at it said that to try for a boy its best to have sex day of or day after you release your egg. Because the sperm that is the Y chromosome swims a little faster than the one with the X Chromosome. But its all luck of conception. Good luck. And just be happy with the child you have its what your to have.
